Fun Run & Midhurst 10k

A two-week postponement because of atrocious weather did not deter entrants for West Wight Road Runners’ Annual Children’s Fun Run. The sun shone and a total of 50 children successfully completed the one-mile course and received their medals. First home in the under-9 run was 8-year-old Conor Brown in 7.53, followed by Edward Pritchett (also 8) and 7-year-old Aiden Hall. The first girl, Rosanna Sexton, was 4th and the youngest finisher was 2-year-old Jamie Hall. Sadly, the 2012 Olympics will come a wee bit too soon for Jamie. In the 9-14 event, 13-year-old James Sykes was first home in 6.02, followed by 12-year old Christy Flux and Jamie Cox, aged 10. First girl was 13-year-old Fiona Waite.

A team of 3 made the trip to the mainland, courtesy of Wightlink, to compete in the Midhurst 10k, which had a record number of over 600 competitors Ian Jolliffe finished 52nd overall, and 2nd in his age group. Stewart Cox and Vic Loveday were boxed in near the back of the runners at the start, but worked their way through to finish in the top half of the field in 49.00 and 49.04 respectively.

During the summer, West Wight Road Runners meet on Wednesday evenings at various scenic venues across West Wight for runs of between 3 and 6 miles, mainly off-road. Next Wednesday they meet at 7pm. at car park by Chale Scout hut (GR 484778). Non-members are welcome.
