Although not quite as exotic as Rhodes, Portsmouth & Winchester were the venues for two recent road races where Simon represented WWRR.
July 4th saw a 5K evening road race which is part of the Portsmouth Promenade series. Unfortunately, the windy conditions were not conducive to fast times for the field of 155. Even the winning time was down on previous races over the same course. Feeling his performance was ‘workmanlike’, Simon came home in 20th position and 3rd V45 in a vet pb of 18.15.
Travelling onto Winchester on Sunday 8th he competed in a 10K road race on a course billed as flat! Amid gloriously hot conditions, the course turned out to be extremely hilly and challenging. Never really getting into a rhythm, Simon came home in 11th place (2nd V45) in a field of 306, in a disappointing time of 38.23. While this was an extremely well organised event, the undulating course made it a challenge rather than an enjoyable race for him, particularly as his all black kit turned him into the running equivalent of a solar panel.
The next race on the Island is the Ryde 10,000M club track race next Tuesday at 7.30 on the track in Sandown, where guests are welcome.
