Unlike the stormy weather of the last two years, conditions were ideal for the 11 West Wight Road Runners who travelled to the latest Hampshire Road Race League race, the Victory 5. With several of the regular female runners unavailable it was left to some of the newest members to represent the club, with three of the ladies team competing in their first race for the club. They performed magnificently to bring the team home in 4th position in the most keenly contested race of the season so far, maintaining the team’s overall second position in Division 3 of the League. First home was Hayley Waite in 41.39, followed by Claire Hopkins (42.25), Lucy Whittle (47.22) and Claire Critchison (53.31).
The men also put in a good performance with Andrew McEwan recording exactly 30 minutes, followed by Gareth Knight (31.54) and Ian Jolliffe (32.43). Next home was Paul Judge (34.00) in only his second race for the club, followed by Paul Scivier (34.54), Eric Critchison (39.38) and Vic Loveday (40.25). This gave them 5th position for the third time this season, consolidating their overall 5th position in the league.
The next ‘event’ is the annual Boxing Day run over Tennyson Down, starting from the car park in Freshwater Bay at 11am. All are welcome for this informal run, with hardier runners taking a dip in the sea afterwards.
