West Wight Road Runners enjoyed some excellent results in yesterday’s classic 10k road race despite only entering a surprisingly small team.
Winning the race overall and leading the field home by a comfortable margin was Simon McMorran in a time of 38.14. Simon had broken away from the main field from the start and for the first two kilometres was running with Will Ambrosini and Rafal Nowak from the mainland.
When Simon pushed on he broke clear and soon found himself with a large lead. He described it as a very strange feeling not being able to hear other runners around him. It was difficult knowing what pace to go at – particularly during the long climb up Beeper Shute. He held a good pace through to the end and despite the second placed runner closing towards the end the result was never in doubt with Simon winning by a substantial 21 second margin.
This was Simon’s first win since junior events and a just reward for some excellent performances over the last year. His running had been going well in training but before the event he had no great expectations as this was his first run over the hilly course and the field was an unknown quantity.

Will Ambrosini had a good run coming in second runner for WWRR. He started very strongly – helping to set the early pace. He lost a few places in the middle of the race when his pace slowed slightly - perhaps as he has not been able to train much recently due to work commitments – but he dug deep to hang on to a very creditable sixth place overall in 39.44.
Andrew McEwen was 8th in a time of 40.22 having had a good run - also his first on the Brading course.
Eric Critchison finished his first 10k run in a very creditable time of 50.27 and placed 46th out of 71 finishers. On a warm and humid day the hilly course was a baptism of fire so many congratulations to Eric on his inaugural run over the distance.
Overall McMorran, Ambrosini and McEwen won the first men’s team prize for West Wight Road Runners (15 points) with organisers Ryde Harriers second (26 points).
In what must be almost a record in itself Simon received five awards for the race: as well as collecting his finishers medal and medal for first runner overall, he also received team first award and prizes for first vet over 40 and fastest island runner!
